History
The Château de Pourtalès was built from the wealthy Strasbourgian
family Bussière in 1750. During 1870 till 1914 countess Mélanie and
count Strasbourg hosted many European higher nobility and other
well-known personalities. Just to name a few of the numerous European
nobility and famous personages: Albert Schweitzer, Franz List,
Napoléon III., Belgium and Russian princess and many more.
With the 1st and the 2nd World War the situation worsened for the
castle. Firstly, the Germans occupied the castle, later the Americans.
After the 2nd World War, the castle housed an eastern European
University, which had to be closed with the building of the Berlin
Wall.
In 1972, Dr. Walter Leibrecht purchased the castle, which was nearly
dilapidated. The following 25 years, the castle housed the students of
the Schiller International University.
After the decision to move the hotel management course to Switzerland,
the castle is now used for the MBA program and as a hotel.
Lately, the château is also becoming more and more a center for seminars and
outdoor activities, due to its beautiful setting.
